To this day, Julianna Margulies has the dubious distinction of being one of the few Sopranos women that Tony didn’t sleep with.

In her career, Margulies has been a nurse on E.R., one of the many forgettable characters in the hype-driven Snakes on a Plane, and - of course - a heroin-addicted real estate agent who gets a main character back on smack and nearly gets into Tony Soprano’s slacks.

This year, she came briefly back to T.V. as a character that she describes as “dark, complicated, funny, and screwed-up.” She had her time in the spotlight for a little over a month, and then it was all over.

The short-lived Fox series Canterbury’s Law wouldn’t even have been under consideration for the actress, except Margulies originally thought that “Fox” was “FX.” And for good reason - whoever had typed up the cover letter had committed an all-important typo. Margulies was looking for a cable show, which she hoped would mean higher quality for less work. When her agent set her straight on what network was approaching her, “it was a tough decision.”

She freely admits that not all 22 episodes of E.R. were solid gold as the seasons wore on. At the breakneck speed of network T.V., she explains, it’s impossible to keep up the quality. She was hoping for something more low-key with some leisurely money behind it. But she loved “Canterbury’s Law” too much, so she teamed up with Fox to shoot the pilot.

Then pregnant, Margulies still worked hard and had fun. FOX picked it up as a mid-season replacement for House during the writer’s strike, then unceremoniously canceled it on May 15th. Just another T.V. casualty. All of the effort and passion that was put into it, all of the struggle and hard work of Margulies and other actors - none of it matters, now.
