Whedon’s New Media: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Neil Patrick Harris might have starred in an annoying and improbable sitcom back in the day, but lately he’s devoted himself to slightly more interesting and unpredictable roles. At thirty-five, he’s parodied himself in both Harold & Kumar films and gained a whole new fanbase through his work on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

Now, he’s about to star in something entirely new.

Lately, so-called “new media” has gained a lot of attention. It was a main subject of discussion during the WGA strike, and recently the Emmys confirmed the eligibility of online-only series for any of their awards. The internet has made it possible to stream video to people without cable TV, and this will only get truer as the government takes steps to bring free high-speed internet to the entire country.

Jumping onto the online video serial bandwagon next is Joss Whedon. yes, that Joss Whedon. As if there were another Joss Whedon.

With shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly under his belt, Whedon is ever-eager to expand into different media. He recently began supervising the production of a Buffy comic, which is still thrilling the most hardcore of Buffy fans. And now? An online series.

Starring - as you may have guessed - Neil Patrick Harris, the series is called Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. And it’s a musical.

Sounds like a potential trainwreck, but over the years we’ve learned to trust Joss Whedon and his vision. His unique style of dialogue has been mimicked many times, but never successfully duplicated. Only Joss can do what Joss does.

Also in the cast of Doctor Horrible are Nathan Fillion, a veteran of nearly all Whedon’s projects (as well as films like Slither and Waitress), and Felicia Day, who played one of the potential Slayers in Buffy’s Season 7.

You can watch the teaser here, or pretty much anywhere. What do you think?
