When “The Simpsons” Becomes Art
Recently, a devoted mother of a new graduate decided to get her son something special for graduation. Some kids get checks, others get the keys to a new motor vehicle…others get the promise of a car, later revoked because “the insurance is too expensive.” (Come on, it’s not like you didn’t know how much it costs to own a
car and insure a teenaged driver. UGH MOM I AM SO MAD AT YOU.)
Anyway.
This mom, who, unlike my own, is clearly very devoted and sweet, decided to create something unique and special.
The photographer describes it:
sara and i passed this house in whycocomagh on our way to cape breton island, and were both like, “what the hell? STOP THE CAR.” and we turned around and took pictures in some family’s front yard. when the lady who owns the house poked her head out, we apologized, but she said she didn’t mind that we were there.
it turns out she’d made all of these wooden simpsons cutouts herself, from scratch, as a surprise for her son who was graduating from high school. she told us that he’d worked really hard and only took breaks to watch the simpsons. how awesome is that? they were such great quality, really impeccable likenesses. we were really impressed, and had so much fun walking around taking pictures of everything. it was such a neat thing to see these characters smack dab in the middle of the real world. it made for some really interesting shots!
I love stories like this, because they prove that television doesn’t have to be a spectator sport. Even a show that we mostly take for granted, like The Simpsons, can inspire creativity, art, and an amazingly thoughtful gesture like this.
Instead of buying one of the approximately six million pieces of Simpsons merchandise, this mother put hours of painstaking work into creating a piece of memorabilia like no other.
That’s love.
